Dayton Area Red Cross Expands Outreach to Local Hispanic Community

Dayton, Monday, February 20, 2008  —   The Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is making new strides in its effort to reach out to the region's Hispanic community.  Tomorrow, Thursday, February 21st from 5:30 - 7:30 PM, Tom Fodor, CEO of the Dayton Area Chapter will be participating in a forum on efforts and intiative in diversity at El Meson Restaurant in West Carrolton.  His presentation will address the multiple initiatives and strategies that the Red Cross performing in order to encourage and support diversity.

Utilizing a generous grant from the CareSource Foundation, The   Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross reached out to the largely hispanic congregation of Dayton's Holy Family Church earlier this month.  Chapter volunteers and staff prepared, delivered, and served a meal of tacos, beans, rice and Horchata on Sunday, February 3rd.

During the event, which drew a crowd of more than 200, the Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provided information about the services they  provide, how to prepare for potential disasters and how to provide immediate assistance to a friend or loved one in an emergency.

Two kitchen teams (one at the chapter and one at the church) and an ERV team were in place. Preparation of the food actually began on Saturday with the chapter kitchen crew making the rice for the meal. Cooking continued on Sunday morning with the preparation of ground beef for the tacos, heating the rice, and mixing a Mexican drink called Horchata.  Mid-morning on Sunday, the chapter ERV was dispatched to the church with all the paper supplies, condiments, coolers, etc. The church kitchen crew proceeded to make pinto beans and coffee for the meal at the church.

Approximately 100 additional meals were delivered to St. Vincent as the evening meal at the shelter on Superbowl Sunday.

The Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides disaster preparedness and response, and health and safety education to residents of Montgomery, Greene and Preble counties, as well as assistance to families with members in the military.  The Chapter also operates Emergency Housing Programs in Montgomery and Greene counties.  Led by volunteers, responds to more than 200 local disaster incidents each year.The Dayton Area Chapter is a United Way agency.
