Dayton Area Red Cross Is Expanding Greene County Emergency Housing Program
Groundbreaking Held for Seven Transitional Housing Units
(Xenia, Ohio) On Tuesday, March 11th, the Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, Greene County Emergency Housing Program held a groundbreaking ceremony for seven transitional housing units for families to be built on East Main Street in Xenia.
Established in 1990, the Greene County Emergency Housing Program of the American Red Cross Dayton Area Chapter helps combat the growing problem of homelessness for families. Because of fires and carbon monoxide leaks, displacements from condemned dwellings, evictions and utility shutoffs, dozens of families are refered to the Emergency Housing Program by an extensive network of government agencies, non-profit organizations, schools, church groups and others.
Together with a similar program established for Montgomery County in 1981, the Red Cross's local emergency housing programs assisted 422 families, including 731 children during the past year.
Supported by funding from Huntington National Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati and the Ohio Housing Financing Agency, the Red Cross the new seven unit companion transitional housing component to provide up to six months of additional housing for families. The expansion has been strongly supported by the Red Cross Board of Directors, Chapter management and community leaders.
All local Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the American people.
