LOCAL RED CROSS TACKLING LIFEGUARD SHORTAGE IN THE MIAMI VALLEY

Dayton, Ohio, May 24, 2006 – The national shortage of lifeguards has consistently forced pools and beaches across the country to drastically cut hours or close altogether in recent years. This year the shortage may affect pools in the Miami Valley, marring summer recreation in the area.

The lifeguard shortage is due to several factors, including other attractive job opportunities that require less responsibility and better wages, and an increase in the number of aquatic facilities with multiple attractions, such as slides and wave pools that require more lifeguard coverage. While in many areas the demand for lifeguards has grown, the rate of people trained as lifeguards has remained constant.

“Pools in Greene, Montgomery and Preble counties desperately needs more lifeguards,” said Jodi Loper, Aquatic & Instructor Specialist with the Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “The current lifeguard shortage may threaten the safety of many children and families this summer. Without more trained lifeguards, ‘Pool Closed’ and ‘Swim at Your Own Risk’ signs will become an unwelcome component of family vacations this year.”

Anyone interesting in becoming a lifeguard is encouraged to contact the Dayton Area Chapter, which teaches the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. The program reflects the latest lifesaving techniques in a format to fit busy schedules. It includes intense, hands-on skill practice designed to strengthen decision-making and response skills and provides the opportunity for training in the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
