Volunteer Opportunities

Disaster Team Member
The Disaster Team’s purpose is to place trained volunteers at the scene of a disaster within minutes of its occurrence. The team provides immediate identifiable emergency services such as food, clothing, shelter and health services to disaster victims. Each team member will be trained in First Aid, CPR, Damage Assessment, Shelter Management and other introductory courses. Disaster team volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be in good health, have their own transportation and telephone, and must be willing to respond as needed when they are on duty.

Disaster Health and Disaster Mental Health Services
When a disaster strikes, the Red Cross assists in meeting the physical and emotional health needs associated with a disaster. Volunteers respond to the emotional and physical needs of disaster victims and workers.

Health & Safety Instructor
You can become a Red Cross volunteer instructor in one or more of the following courses and help people throughout the community prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Contact hours are available for RNs and LPNs for most of our instructor courses. The minimum age for instructors is 17 years old. The courses are:

  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR (Adult and Infant/Child)
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Education
  • Babysitting
  • Lifeguarding

Tutors
Tutors at the Greene County and Montgomery County Emergency Housing Programs assist children housed at the programs with math and reading. Tutors for the Red Cross “English for Speakers of Other Languages” (ESOL) program assist people who speak another primary language to become proficient in English. Classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at the downtown office. Tutors can volunteer one or both evenings and need not speak another language to volunteer.

Veteran’s Administration (VA) Medical Center Volunteer Opportunities
The American Red Cross VA Volunteer Program provides support to hospitalized veterans. Volunteers provide bed side visits, serve coffee, lend a listening ear, and distribute care kits and other meaningful tasks. Support the office by volunteering one to five days per week with light record keeping and clerical support.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Volunteer Opportunities

  • Medical Center Coordinators manage the Volunteer Program in the office
at the Wright-Patterson Medical Center, coordinate volunteer schedules,
answer telephones, and interview and place volunteers in the Medical Center.
  • Clerical Assistance is needed in many locations throughout the Medical
Center as well as in the Red Cross volunteer office. Volunteers with MS
    Word experience are highly desired.
  • Leadership Volunteers work with the Volunteer/Human Resources
Specialist to lead the volunteer program for WPAFB.

Special Events Volunteer
This is a wonderful opportunity for people who want to volunteer every now and then. Our events are always fun!

Special Projects Volunteer
Special projects volunteers work on a variety of projects from folding and stapling our newsletters to assembling comfort care kits. Special project volunteers provide valued support so that these tasks can be completed as quickly and cost effectively as possible. Hours are flexible.

Groups
We welcome all kinds of groups such as churches, companies, civic organizations, schools, or even just groups of friends. Groups can help with either special projects or special events. It’s a fun way to help the community and the Red Cross.

(Must pre-register three days prior to orientation)

The Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides disaster preparedness and response, and health and safety education to residents of Greene, Montgomery and Preble counties, as well as assistance to families with members in the military.  The Chapter also operates Emergency Housing Programs in Greene and Montgomery counties.  Led by volunteers, the Dayton Area Chapter responds to an average of 200 local disaster incidents each year.
