Dayton Area Chapter Named Not-For-Profit Organization of the Year
December 1, 2005 - The Dayton Area Chapter was named Not-for-Profit Organization of the Year by the Dayton Business Journal. This is the fourth year for the publication's awards program, which honors the most outstanding businesses, organizations and executives in 2005. Board Chair Hunter Parker and Chapter Chief Executive Officer Tom Fodor accepted the award on behalf of the Chapter at a gala dinner November 30th at the Schuster Center.
The Chapter was recognized for a unique blend of teamwork involving management, staff, the Board of Directors, the Associate Board, community resources -- both financial and personnel -- and our 1,400 volunteers.
The Chapter was lauded for our response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster. The numbers are significant -- 700 evacuees helped, $200,000 in direct cash assistance distributed, more than 100 volunteers deployed, and 379 new disaster volunteers trained. Disaster Action Team volunteers ran the reception center for weeks. It was noted that we were basically open for business all but three days in September to better serve our community, using corporate volunteers to help us operate. By the way, we also raised more than $1 million in that month alone for national disaster relief.
But the main reason we were recognized was that our regular business continued unabated. During that same month of September, Health and Safety trained 1,390 people. Our housing programs sheltered 278. We assisted 60 residents at the scenes of fires. We conducted 49 armed forces communications. All this was executed even though four Management Team members were deployed to hurricane sites and staff was pressed into extra duty, working well beyond their normal hours.
