Health and Safety Services

For nearly a century, the American Red Cross has prepared people to save lives through health and safety education and training. From first aid, CPR and bloodborne pathogens training to swimming, lifeguarding and Babysitter's Training, American Red Cross Health & Safety Services' preparedness programs help people lead safer and healthier lives. The Red Cross constantly strives to respond to the preparedness concerns of Americans at home, in school and in the workplace. Today's innovative programs also include teaching lay persons and professionals how to use automated external defibrillators
(AEDs) to save victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Last year, nearly 11 million people enrolled in American Red Cross health and safety courses.

19,675 individuals enrolled in the Dayton Area Chapter’s CPR/First Aid programs last year, which included training in the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Sudden Cardiac Arrest can strike anyone, at any time, anywhere, resulting in more than 200,000 deaths every year in the U.S. It is estimated that 25% could have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chain of Survival and used an AED. Four critical steps that significantly enhance the likelihood that a victim of cardiac arrest will survive.

  • Step One Early access to care (calling 9-1-1 or another emergency number)
  • Step Two Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Step Three Early defibrillation utilizing an AED
  • Step Four Early advanced cardiac life support, as needed
